Charles Delmar Haney III was a very good friend and a fellow car enthusiast. "Del", as he was known to all his friends, had one of the coolest cars at THS at that time. It was a 1959 2 door Chevy Biscayne. It had a 283 cid engine that he took out and had the block and rotating mass balanced and blueprinted. He brought the cylinder heads into the Aviation Shop, where we meticulously ported and polished the intakes. Put back together, it was a real "screamer". The car came with a lightweight 3 speed Saginaw manual transmission, that could not hold up under the increased horsepower. If I recall correctly, after destroying a couple of the lightweights, he went with a Borg-Warner 4 speed. Godspeed Del, on that final quarter mile pass.
