James Michael Tallmadge

A community of students, parents and teachers are mourning the death of James Tallmadge, who taught and volunteered at Sam Hughes Elementary School for 52 years.

Tallmadge died Monday of complications from COVID-19. He was 74.

Getting “Mr. T” as your teacher was like winning the lottery, his former students and their parents said. Tallmadge is remembered as exuberant, inclusive and kind, the embodiment of what a teacher can be, and an example of how a life well-lived touches so many lives.

He had an old-fashioned bathtub in his classroom, filled with pillows, where kids could take a reading break. And he taught math and spelling by turning the lessons into athletic-style competitions.

So sad.  JT and I were good friends most of our lives.  We played football at THS and joined in on other activites.  At the UofA we saw a little less of each other because of school work.  One summer break before our sophmore year we went to Yuma and picked cantaloupes.  Sometimes after work I would drop in the Poco Loco, on Speedway, and could often find him there playing cribbage with the owner.  I have so many good memories being his friend.  He was alwyas positive and upbeat with those around him.  I will miss you my friend.

Jim will always be my 4th grade square dance partner from Robison Elementary School in my memories of him.  Very happy I saw him at 2014 THS reunion.  I'm sorry he's gone so soon.
